Legal Proceedings Relating to Domestic Violence

Domestic violence is a serious problem in Minnesota, as it is everywhere. To protect victims of violence, abuse, and harassment, Minnesota courts can issue civil orders for protection (OFP) or harassment restraining orders (HRO). In criminal cases, they can also issue domestic abuse no contact orders (DANCOs).

Legal advocacy is often key to empowering victims of domestic violence to secure the protection they deserve. In some cases, legal advocacy may also be important to disprove a false claim of domestic violence — one that may itself be designed as a method of control.
